PARIS (AP) — With strikes and protests, French unions are staging a last-ditch bid to dismantle a labor law that weakens their powers and worker protections.
However the labor action appeared low-key Thursday morning, with only minimal disruption to schools, transport and other public services. The civil aviation authority said 15 percent of flights were cancelled at Paris area airports. A protest is planned through Paris later.
Unions are protesting a labor law adopted this summer that allows longer workweeks and makes it easier for companies to lay off staff.
President Francois Hollande's socialist government hopes it will make France more competitive. Unions say it damages hard-won worker rights.
Didier Porte of the Workers Force union told France-Info radio that unions are studying legal options to try to overturn some of the measures.
