French police officers on Friday killed the two brothers suspected of murdering 12 people at a Paris newspaper on Wednesday and freed their hostage unharmed.
In a simultaneous raid on a kosher supermarket in Paris, police also killed an alleged associate of Said and Cherif Kouachi, who was holding several hostages.
The BBC reports the Kouachis attempted a desperate escape from the printing works where they were hold up with their hostage. They were killed as they ran from the building, firing at police.
Moments later, gunfire erupted at the kosher supermarket, on the eastern end of Paris. Initial reports in the French newspaper Le Monde said that as many as four of the hostages held in the market have also been killed..
The suspect in Paris, believed to be Amedy Coulibaly, had threatened to kill his hostages if the Kouachis were attacked.
Vigils were held across France and Europe this week after the Wednesday morning massacre at Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine in Paris, where 12 people were killed. The slaughter is believed to be retaliation for the magazine's cartoons about Islam. Charlie Hebdo also has lampooned Judaism, Christianity and government and cultural figures in general.
