Free Rate Rule

A federal court in California enjoined California Public Utilities Commission officials from enforcing the “Free Rate Rule,” which requires wireless telecommunications service providers that participate in California’s “LifeLine” program to provide certain service plans for free. The rule is preempted by the Communications Act of 1934.

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal court in California enjoined California Public Utilities Commission officials from enforcing the “Free Rate Rule,” which requires wireless telecommunications service providers that participate in California’s “LifeLine” program to provide certain service plans for free. The rule is preempted by the Communications Act of 1934.
