France’s Government Reshuffle Expected Soon

An anticipated reshuffling of French government ministers remained up in the air as the Cabinet prepared to meet Wednesday and President Emmanuel Macron departs for Armenia.

PARIS (AP) — An anticipated reshuffling of French government ministers remained up in the air as the Cabinet prepared to meet Wednesday and President Emmanuel Macron departs for Armenia.

Macron was expected to approve the naming of new ministers following the resignation of the interior minister last week. The French presidency said there would be no announcement Tuesday night.

Before the weekly Cabinet meeting was viewed as a likely time to present the revised roster. Macron is scheduled to head to Armenia on Wednesday evening.

Government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux said last week the interior minister would be replaced "within a few days."

Macron could seize the occasion to extend the restructuring to other government positions. He met with Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Tuesday to discuss changes.

Some ministers and junior ministers could be replaced or see changes to their functions.

Philippe, speaking at the lower house of parliament Tuesday, said the government is "not febrile."

Macron has seen his popularity plummet in recent months following a series of comments perceived by some as arrogant, and a scandal surrounding his ex-security aide.
