Four Get Prison for Dog Fighting Ring

ST. LOUIS (CN) - Four men who ran a big dog-fighting ring were sentenced to federal prison. Two men got 18-month terms and two others were sentenced to 1 year each.

Teddy Kiriakidis, 50, of Leasburg, Mo., and Ronald Creach, 34, of Leslie, Mo., were sentenced to 18 months in prison, followed by 2 years of supervised release. Kiriakidis also was fined $2,000 fine on one count of conspiracy to commit federal offenses.

Michael Morgan, 38, of Hannibal, Mo., and Robert Hackman, 56, of Foley, Mo., were sentenced to 366 days in prison, followed by 2 years of supervised release. They were sentenced for one felony count of conspiracy to commit federal offenses and one felony count of prohibitions against animal fighting ventures.

The men admitted they ran kennels and routinely and inhumanely abandoned and killed pit bull terriers who lost fights or did not perform well enough. They did this between January 2008 and June 2009.

The men agreed to forfeit ownership of the seized dogs to the federal government. They cannot own any animals while on supervised release.

The court ordered that ownership of the seized dogs be transferred from the federal government to the Humane Society of Missouri.
