Former KJLH Deejay Sues Stevie Wonder

LOS ANGELES (CN) - A former disc jockey for KJLH Radio has sued the station and its principal owner, Stevie Wonder, in superior court claiming they allowed him to be slandered on the air by broadcasting false allegations that he had got a woman pregnant through an extramarital affair and would not admit it.

Clifton Winston demands punitive damages from the defendants, including Wonder's company, Taxi Productions, which owns KJLH-102.3 FM.

Winston does not claim that the woman defamed him by name in the April 18, 2007 broadcast. But he says the broadcast "was made of and concerning Plaintiff Winston and was so understood by those who listened to the publication as pertaining to Plaintiff."

Winston also sued KJLH program director Aundrae Russell and "radio personalities" Lawrence Williams and Janine Haydel, claiming they consulted with Wonder before airing the allegedly defamatory message, and that they allowed it to be broadcast "despite having knowledge of the falsity of the statements and knowledge of the damage that the statement would cause".

Winston is represented by Michelle Hill of Diamond Bar.

Wonder's given name is Steveland Morris.

(This complaint was filed Feb. 29 but was not made available to Courthouse News until March 6, as it was temporarily misfiled in the courthouse.)
