Former Campus Cop Faces Retrial on Murder Charge

An Ohio prosecutor said Tuesday that he plans to retry former University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing for the shooting death of an unarmed black man, after a deadlocked jury resulted in a mistrial.

CINCINNATI (CN) – An Ohio prosecutor said Tuesday that he plans to retry former University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing for the shooting death of an unarmed black man, after a deadlocked jury resulted in a mistrial.

A mistrial was declared nearly two weeks ago after the jury hearing Tensing’s trial could not reach a verdict on murder and manslaughter charges.

Sam DuBose, an unarmed black man, was shot and killed by Tensing, who is white, during a traffic stop in July 2015.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said Tuesday morning that public opinion of the case may have “seeped into the jury room,” and that he intends to seek a change of venue.

When asked about the story being widespread throughout the state, Deters responded, “I’ll go to Hawaii and try it if they want.”

The decision will ultimately rest with Hamilton County Judge Megan Shanahan, who Deters described as “fantastic” and “a great judge.”

Deters said he will personally retry the case, regardless of venue, and hopes to begin by early next year.
