WASHINGTON (CN) - Beverly Masek pleaded guilty in to state charges conspiracy to commit bribery in programs receiving federal funds. Masek, a former member of the Alaska House of Representatives, conspired with VECO Corp.'s CEO Bill Allen and its vice president Richard Smith, according to the Justice Department.
According to the plea in Anchorage district court, Masek traded public policy acts in exchange for bribes and a consulting position with VECO. Masek, a Republican, faces up to 5 years in jail and $250,000 in fines. She will be sentenced on May 28.
Eleven criminal convictions have resulted so far from continuing investigations of public corruption in Alaska. Scalps include those of state representatives Thomas Anderson and Victor Kohring, and U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens.
