Fla. Attorney Disbarred

(CN) - A Florida attorney was disbarred for falsely representing herself as counsel for a woman in jail to gain access to her car.

The Florida Supreme Court took the action against attorney Ann Bitterman. She had given a vehicle to a friend who later ended up behind bars.

Bitterman, whose legal license was suspended at the time, used her Florida Bar card to gain a private visit with the friend in jail.

Bitterman asked for an ownership interest in the car. The friend angrily refused.

Bitterman then went to Diaz Towing and, posing as the friend's attorney, convinced the company to release the vehicle to her.

The friend had to file a replevin action to recover the vehicle.

A referee recommended that Bitterman be suspended for three months, but the state Supreme Court justices agreed with the Florida Bar's position that Bitterman should lose her license.

Because Bitterman has been suspended since 2004, the court made her disbarment effective immediately.
