First Anniversary of|Trayvon Martin’s Death

SANFORD, Fla. (CN) - One year ago today Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot to death 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman claimed self-defense under Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law and is set to go to trial June 10.

Martin, who was black, was walking to his father's home to watch football, holding candy and a soft drink.

Peace walks and candlelight vigils will be held today, including one in Sanford at 7:15 p.m., around the time Martin was shot.

The shooting sparked outrage and protests around the nation. Zimmerman was not arrested until 44 days after the shooting.

He was charged with second-degree murder and released on bond.

Some call today "National Hoodie Day." Martin was wearing a hooded sweat jacket when he was killed. Martin's parents claim Zimmerman racially profiled their son and killed him "in cold blood."

A judge recently denied Zimmerman's request to postpone the trial until November.

Zimmerman has been in hiding in Seminole County, Fla.
