Fire Alarm Closes Down Courthouse

WILMINGTON, DEL. (CN) - The New Castle County Courthouse was evacuated on Monday when a 17-year old boy broke a water sprinkler head that set off the building's fire alarm system.

The damaged sprinkler head triggered the system to spew water and chemicals onto two Family Court courtrooms, causing almost $30,000 in damages, court officials said. An elevator used to transport prisoners was also damaged by the water and chemical mixture.

The boy, who was in a room behind Family Courtroom 1B when he damaged the sprinkler head, was charged with felony criminal mischief, criminal nuisance and second-degree reckless endangering.
