LOS ANGELES (CN) - British film-maker HandMade PLC breached a contract to pay Uma Thurman $4.5 million, plus 10% of "certain receipts," to appear in the movie, "Eloise in Paris," Karuna Dream claims in Superior Court.
Karuna claims HandMade signed a deal in 2008 for Thurman to have a lead role in the movie, which was to begin filming on Feb. 28, 2009. It claims that Karuna repudiated the contract in November, and claimed it would have to pay Thurman only $1.5 million for the repudiation. Plaintiff's attorney Bert Fields says he offered HandMade the chance to withdraw its repudiation, but on Jan. 12 HandMade denied "the existence of any agreement for the services of Uma Thurman."
Fields says Karuna deserves the $4.5 million, plus $5 million it could have expected to make from the 10% contingent commission. He also demands punitive damages.
