Feds Seize Drugs From Filthy|General Therapeutics Warehouse

ST. LOUIS - U.S. Food and Drug Administration agents and Marshals seized $300,000 worth of drugs and supplements from General Therapeutics, citing filthy conditions.

The U.S. Attorney has filed a forfeiture petition against the drug maker. The complaint claims that FDA investigators cited General Therapeutics for serious health violations in 1999 and the company promised it would stop making drugs.

But inspections in August and September this year found that General Therapeutics was making drugs and dietary supplements under filthy and unsanitary conditions that included insects and rodent filth on and around manufacturing equipment, a drug container infested with live and dead beetles too numerous to count, dead cockroaches next to the tablet-compression machine, and rodent excretions in the main production area.

Prosecutors say General Therapeutics had several rooms behind a false wall to conceal drug products from the FDA and that it failed to maintain and clean equipment and keep cleaning records. Some of the drug and supplements seized were Vitrin, NC Solution and Pyran-50.
