WASHINGTON (CN) - The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board is establishing a Rail Vehicles Access Advisory Committee, and requesting applications for membership from interested organizations, according to the agency's proposed rule.
The advisory committee would help the agency revise the guidelines for "transportation vehicles that operate on fixed guideway systems (e.g., rapid rail, light rail, commuter rail, and intercity rail)," to comply with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to the action.
The board wants organizations to recommend applicants for membership who will serve as representatives of their organizations, not as individuals. Specifically, the board wants applicants who represent train manufacturers, transportation providers that operate trains, organizations that represent disabled people, and "other entities whose interests may be affected by the accessibility guidelines." Federally registered lobbyists are not allowed to serve on the committee, and committee members will not be compensated. Although there is not a specific application form, the agency's action spells out the information that should be included when applying.
The public will have opportunities to comment at each meeting of the committee. A notice of the committee's first meeting will be published, and meetings will be announced at least 15 days in advance.
Applications are due no later than April 1.
