LOS ANGELES (CN) - High Desert Dairy, of Lancaster, overmedicated its herd of 5,000 cows with antibiotics so that tissue samples from its meat exceeded legal limits in more than three dozen samples, federal prosecutors say.
Prosecutors say that repeated inspections showed that the dairy failed to properly record its drug administration, did not follow directions on the drugs' labels, and administered drugs for off-label uses without a prescription from a veterinarian, among other things.
The dairy has a herd of 5,000, of which 2,000 are used for milk, the complaint states. It is accused of overmedicating animals with penicillin and sulfa-dimethoxine.
Also sued are the dairy's owners and managers, Delmer and Gary Van Dam.
Prosecutors seek an injunction and costs.
