Feds, Illinois Seek Millions From|Polluting Coal-Fired Power Plants

CHICAGO (CN) - The U.S. Justice Department and Illinois seek millions of dollars in penalties from a company they say operated six coal-fired power plants that released "massive amounts" of pollutants into the air over the past decade.

In its lawsuit filed in Chicago Federal Court, the feds and the state also accuse Midwest Generation LLC of modifying its plants over the years without installing pollution control equipment as required by the federal Clean Air Act.

Plaintiffs want a court order requiring Midwest to install the new monitoring devices. They also seek penalties ranging between $25,000 and $37,500 per day for each alleged violation of the Clean Air Act since January 1997.
