Feds Delay Whale Protection, Says Group

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Secretary of Commerce again is stalling on implementation of whale conservation measures which were promulgated as a result of a previous lawsuit, environmentalists claim in Federal Court. The Defenders of Wildlife are seeking protection for North Atlantic right whales, humpback whales and fin whales.

Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez acted through the co-defendant National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Plaintiffs' lead counsel is Sierra Weaver with Defenders of Wildlife.
