Feds Broker Comcast-NBCU Merger Settlement

(CN) - Comcast and NBC Universal can move forward with a merger deal as long as they conform to conditions laid out by the Justice Department and Federal Communications Commission, government officials announced Tuesday.

The government and five states filed an antitrust complaint against the two companies and NBCU's parent, General Electric, along with the settlement. The agreement calls for the companies to license programming to Comcast's online competitors, subject themselves to anti-retaliation provisions and follow the FCC's Open Internet guidelines.

Justice Department officials say the proposed seven-year settlement looks to an innovative way to preserve new content distribution models.

Unfettered by government intervention, the media companies' transaction would be anti-competitive, the government's lawsuit in the District of Columbia federal court states.

A federal judge must now approve the proposed settlement.
