WASHINGTON (CN) - The Food and Drug Administration plans to implement calorie and nutrition labeling requirements on chain restaurants with 20 or more locations, and businesses that own or operate 20 or more vending machines, according to proposed rules.
The rules would implement provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
The Affordable Care Act requires chain restaurants and similar retail food establishments with 20 or more locations with the same name and substantially the same menu items to provide calorie and other nutrition information for standard menu items, including food on display and self-service food.
The act also requires that if a potential purchaser of a vending machine item cannot see the item's nutritional information, the vending machine operator must show the calorie count, if the owner or operator has 20 or more machines.
