WASHINGTON (CN) - The Federal Communications Commission seeks comments on preventing frequency interference in the upcoming public safety broadband system.
The FCC's proposal addressing frequency interference is part of the implementation of the 2012 Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act (Public Safety Spectrum Act) that would deploy a public safety broadband network.
The act establishes a First Responder Network Authority, referred to as "FirstNet," and directs the FCC to set aside a certain broadband spectrum for public safety purposes.
The FCC seeks comments on implementing FirstNet and transitioning other frequencies out of the designated public safety spectrum.
"We seek comment on the scope of our authority as it relates to these proposals, and how much authority can most appropriately accommodate the Public Safety Spectrum Act's delegation to FirstNet of the responsibility to develop 'the technical and operational requirements of the network," the FCC wrote in its proposal.
The FCC noted that it recognizes that FirstNet needs flexibility in carrying out its duties and that the endeavor has "crucial importance."
The FCC also seeks comments on how to relieve potential economic hardships from relocating broadband networks, and whether FirstNet or other sources could fund relocation.
Comments on the notice of proposed rulemaking are due by May 24.
