FBI Takes Lead in Nevada Bombings Probe

LAS VEGAS (CN) — A man who set off two bombs last week in Panaca, Nev., shot himself before the explosions, a coroner said, and the FBI has taken the lead in the investigation.

Glenn Franklin Jones, 59, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound before the twin detonations, which blew up his body, Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg told The Associated Press.

Police in Kingman, Ariz., on Thursday ordered the evacuation of part of the Zuni Village RV Park, where Jones rented a motor home.

The evacuation ended Friday night, after federal and local law enforcement found and disposed of several bombs at Jones' rented motor home, the Kingman Daily Miner reported.

FBI spokeswoman Bridget Pappas told the Las Vegas Review-Journal the agency is continuing to work with local law enforcement, though police in Kingman and in Lincoln County, Nev., told the newspaper the FBI has taken the lead.

Police say Jones drove from Kingman to Panaca, about 165 miles north of Las Vegas, where he targeted his supervisor, Josh Cluff, with two bombs.

One obliterated a car and the other destroyed most Cluff's home.

Cluff was not home. Jones ordered Cluff's wife and three children to leave before shooting himself and the bombs exploded.

The Nevada State Board of Nursing in April suspended Jones' nursing license for five years after investigating at least two incidents in which Jones, a licensed practical nurse, checked out hypodermic needles containing morphine doses but did not report using them on patients last year, The Associated Press reported.

Although Jones apparently wanted to kill Cluff and blew up his home, the two had a friendly relationship and no history of animosity, the AP reported.

The FBI and police said they found homemade bombs and several pounds of explosives at the Kingman motor home Jones rented and used as a bomb-making lab.

The investigation continues.
