FBI Investigating Second Hack of Democrats

(CN) - The FBI is investigating a previously undisclosed hack into computer systems at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The hacking of emails at the Democratic National Committee led to embarrassing revelations of the party's efforts on behalf of Hillary Clinton and created a largely unhealed break with diehard supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

According to Reuters, investigators believe the DCCC hack may have been intended to gather information about donors.

The DCCC raises money for Democrats running for seats in the House of Representatives.

Meredith Kelly, a spokeswoman for the committee, said it is using the forensic investigation firm Crowdstrike to look into the matter and is cooperating with federal law enforcement.

It is believed the latest hacking of the party may have begun only last month.

Reuters says that in June a phony website was registered with a name closely resembling that of a main donation site connected to the DCCC, and that for a time, internet traffic that was supposed to go to a company that processes campaign donations went to the bogus site instead.

No other details were available Thursday night.
