Family of Inmate Killed in Van Crash Settles Lawsuit

(CN) - A prisoner-transportation company agreed to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the parents of Utah inmate who was killed after the driver transporting him to another prison allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his van.

In connection with the undisclosed settlement, U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball dismissed the lawsuit filed by Robert and Linda Talbot in June against the Delaware-based U.S. Extradition Services and the driver, Gregory Reed.

The Talbots accused the defendants of failing to properly safeguard their son, Shawn, when they were transporting him to a prison in another state.

They say Reed fell asleep while driving, causing the van to crash and roll. Shawn's hands and feet were shackled, according to the lawsuit.

The Talbots sued for $75,000 in damages, but the Kimball's order does not reveal the amount of the settlement.
