False arrest in car sale

CHICAGO — A federal court in Illinois partially granted an Illinois suburb’s motion to dismiss a Florida car rental company and its owner’s claims for fraud, tort, false arrest and indemnity. The owner paid for a car from a dealer in the suburb in April 2023 using a check from a third-party financer, but when he arrived to pick up the vehicle, the dealer wanted to make him finance the purchase in-house. The dealer clandestinely called the local police, who arrested the owner even though he showed police evidence the check was valid. His false arrest and indemnity claims proceed against the suburb and its police.
