FAA Says a Turbomeca|Engine Is Not Airworthy

WASHINGTON (CN) - An Arriel 2S2 helicopter engine shut down in flight, resulting in an accident, and the Federal Aviation Administration plans to add the engine to an airworthiness directive.

The airworthiness directive requires a "TU166" modification intended to prevent rupture of a gas generator turbine blade, which may result in the engine shutting down.

The original airworthiness directive applies to certain Turbomeca S.A. Arriel 2B and 2B1 turboshaft engines. The compliance time for making the modification to the Arriel 252 would be different from that of the 2B and 2B1.
