F-16 and Small Plane Collide Near Charleston

(CN) - An F-16 fighter and a small plain collided in midair just outside of Charleston, S.C. on Tuesday, although there is no immediate word on fatalities.

Although details are scant, the Federal Aviation Administration said the the F-16 and a Cessna C150 collided at about 11 a.m., about 11 miles north of the city. Eye witnesses reported seeing a fireball, and debris, including at least one jet engine, raining down on a mobile home park in Moncks Corner, S.C.

Berkeley County officials confirmed that the pilot of the F-16 elected safely and has been transported to a local hospital. The Cessna reportedly plunged into the nearby Cooper River.

Several local fire departments and a marine rescue unit have been dispatched to Berkeley County in response to the crash.
