Ex-School Superintendent Faces Hard Time

LUBBOCK, Texas (CN) - A former West Texas school district superintendent pleaded guilty to embezzling federal money from the Ira Independent School District.

Larry Gene Devitt, 64, pleaded guilty to mail fraud.

He was charged with using district credit cards and vendors for personal benefit. Prosecutors said the money was intended for school supplies, staff development and training.

Under a plea agreement, Devitt agreed to surrender his Texas Educator Certificate and repay more than $13,400. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine and restitution.

Ira is about 240 miles west of Fort Worth.
