SAN DIEGO (CN) - A former San Diego cop was sentenced to 2½ years in federal prison on Monday for abusing his police powers "to obtain and pass sensitive information to associates involved in drug trafficking crimes," the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Juan Hurtado Tapia, who pleaded guilty in April, also lied to federal investigators.
Tapia, 39, of Imperial Beach, admitted running a criminal records check on one person as a favor to two others. He was sent directly to prison Monday. He could have been sentenced to more than 30 years.
