NEWARK, N.J. — Fired by the MLB Network in 2014 over his alleged conduct at a youth baseball tournament, former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams can keep a $1.5 million jury award, a New Jersey appeals court ruled Thursday.
Two articles on the sports website Deadspin reported that Williams swore at umpires amid other unruly behavior in May 2014 during a Maryland tournament involving a team of 10-year-olds that included Williams' son.
Williams, whose on-field antics with six teams including the Phillies earned him the nickname "Wild Thing,” denied the allegations.
He sued MLB Network after it cited a morals clause to end his contract as an analyst in 2014.
A jury in Camden County sided with Williams in 2017, and the appeals court affirmed Thursday.
