(CN) - Former National Football League star Plaxico Burress dropped the ball twice by failing to pay $47,903 in taxes, New Jersey prosecutors claim in an indictment.
From Totowa, N.J., Burress became a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers before moving on to the New York Giants, New York Jets and back to the City of Bridges in a career that spanned from 2000 to 2013.
Stacking up a career total of 8,499 yards, the 37-year-old has also run in and out of court in recent years over legal problems. Burress accepted a plea deal in 2009 for his self-inflicted gunshot wound in an accidental shooting in a Manhattan nightclub.
A year earlier, he faced a civil suit for a car crash involving his Mercedes-Benz, but he reportedly beat driving violations charges filed later.
Burress's current legal problems stem in part from a law New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed on Sept. 11 last year treating failed electronic fund transfers as a crime on par with writing a bad check.
When Burress tried to file his taxes, his EFT never went through, prosecutors say.
Mercer County prosecutors add that Burress ignored multiple notifications
Burress faces a maximum penalty of five years in state prison and a $15,000 fine for two third-degree charges of issuing a bad check and willful failure to pay a state tax, prosecutors say.
