Ex-Mobsters Get Jail Time|for Pattern of Racketeering

MANHATTAN (CN) - Former Genovese mob boss Daniel Leo aka "The Lion" was sentenced to an additional 18 months in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to a pattern of racketeering activity, including loan sharking and illegal gambling. His nephew, Joseph Leo, received one year in prison for similar charges.

Leo was one of many mobsters indicted in October 2007 on federal extortion, loan sharking and illegal gambling charges, and is currently serving a 5-year sentence.

"Danny the Lion" became the acting boss of the Genovese family around 2005, authorities say.

The guilty plea landed Leo an additional 18 months in jail, to be served consecutively with his previous sentence. He was also ordered to forfeit $1.3 million from the family's illegal gambling business.

Daniel's nephew and "primary lieutenant," Joseph Leo, also pleaded guilty on related charges and was sentenced to a year in prison and was ordered to forfeit $200,000 from the crime family's gambling business.

Six other family associates have pleaded guilty in the past year for their roles in the illegal gambling operations.

The case is being handled by the Organized Crime Unit of the U.S. Attorney's Office. Prosecutors are assistant U.S. attorneys David Massey, Avi Weitzman, Brian Jacobs and Jason Hernandez.
