SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CN) - A retired state judge filed a class action challenging a new state law that will begin charging some Illinois retirees for health insurance.
Gordon Maag retired as an appellate judge in 2004. In his lawsuit in Sangamon County Court, Maag wants the law declared unconstitutional.
Gov. Pat Quinn signed the law in June. It will eliminate reduced and free health insurance for more than 80,000 retired government employees.
Quinn told The Associated Press that retirees deserve quality health care, but the change was needed to make the system more cost-effective for taxpayers.
