Ex-Cop Sues Vancouver For Sex Assaults

VANCOUVER, B.C. - A former Vancouver police officer sued the City of Vancouver, its Police Department, and the estate of Lorne Hughes for physical and sexual abuse he allegedly endured at the hands of Hughes, also a cop, as a child and later as member of the department.

The plaintiff, identified only as R.G., claims Hughes, his cousin, begin his violent sexual assaults on visits to the in 1957, when R.G. was 9 years old.

He claims that Hughes openly abused alcohol on the job and ran bootleg alcohol with organized criminals, often enlisting R.G. and his brother to unload the trucks.

Hughes resigned in 1970 after another victim came forward - just a year before R.G. began a 30-year career with the Vancouver P.D., the complaint states. But he says the assaults continued for years, often at police-sponsored events, and that senior members knew about them but did nothing.

R.G. says he went on total disability in 2003, about a year after Hughes died while serving a one-year sentence for indecent assault. R.G. is represented by Taylor Veinotte Sullivan.
