JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - A former Missouri congressman and prosecutor has again been accused of misconduct by an inmate. Former U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof was the prosecutor who helped convict Dale Heming of murdering his mother. Heming was sentenced to life without parole in 1996. A judge this year released another inmate Hulshof had helped convict.
Heming has filed an appeal with the Missouri Supreme Court seeking DNA tests and a new trial. The appeal accuses Hulshof of withholding evidence and knowingly presenting false testimony and evidence.
Hulshof, who is now with the Kansas City law firm Polsinelli Shughart, was accused earlier this year of similar actions in another murder case. In February, a judge found that Joshua Kezer, convicted 15 years ago of murdering a college student, was wrongfully found guilty in part because Hulshof withheld key evidence from defense attorneys and embellished details in his closing arguments. Kezer was released from prison.
Hulshof used his tough-on-crime stance to win six terms in the U.S. House and was recently the Republican nomination for governor. A spokeswoman for Polsinelli Shughart told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Hulshof was unavailable for comment.
