DALLAS (CN) - Chicago Bear wide receiver Sam Hurd faces 10 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to federal charges of possession of marijuana and cocaine with intent to distribute.
Hurd was arrested in December 2011 after met with an undercover agent at a Chicago steakhouse and said he wanted to sell 4 kilos of cocaine a week in Chicagoland, and half a ton of pot. Hurd then bought a kilo of cocaine from the agent, prosecutors said, and Courthouse News reported at the time. He was released on bond, then re-arrested after trying to set up another drug deal.
Hurd, 27, played for the Dallas Cowboys for 5 years before joining the Bears, who paid him $5 million a year. They fired him after he was arrested.
He apologized at his sentencing.
Two co-conspirators have pleaded guilty, prosecutors said.
Hurd will be sentenced in July.
