Ex-Attorney Sues Over Sex-Scandal Coverage

NEW YORK (CN) - A former Cravath Swaine lawyer who fled to Canada after being accused of sexually abusing two teenage girls has sued American Express, Time Warner Cable and others for allegedly giving his information to Canadian authorities, which landed him in jail.

James Patrick Colliton, 44, previously a tax lawyer for Cravath, Swaine & Moore of Manhattan, spent time in three separate prisons in Canada, according to his pro se complaint.

Colliton claims that Time Warner "knowingly" spread defamatory information about him through every available news medium in an effort "to taint beyond repair the pool of potential jurors who would decide criminal charges."

Colliton seeks $4 million in damages against American Express, Time Warner, IBM Corporation, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Novartis Corporation.

Colliton went to Canada in 2006 after he was accused of having sex with two girls, aged 13 and 15, and paying their mother to allow it. He was arrested at an Ontario hotel, but mistakenly released, and then arrested again in New York City.

In October 2007, he pleaded guilty to charges of statutory rape and patronizing a prostitute, and received a one-year sentence.
