Europe Clears Dutch Co.’s Acquisition of Unitymedia

(CN) - The European Commission has given a Dutch cable network operator the green light to buy German rival Unitymedia GmbH, saying the acquisition by Liberty Global Europe Holding wouldn't significantly hinder market competition.

LGE is active in nine European countries, but not in Germany, though its division, Chellomedia, produces three pay-TV channels broadcast in Germany: Extreme Sports Channel, Zone Reality and Zone Club.

Both Unitymedia and LGE license TV content in Austria and Germany.

"The Commission found that the horizontal overlap in the market for licensing of TV content in German-speaking countries is unlikely to lead to competition problems due to the parties' limited market share and the presence of strong competitors such as Sky, Canal+ and RTL-Group," the European Commission stated in a press release.

The commission also found no indication that the merger would restrict access to pay-TV channels or Internet and phone networks.
