EU Oversight Board Begins Stats Reform

(CN) - The internationally based members of the European Union advisory board met for the first time this month to begin an annual report to the European Parliament in an effort to improve European statistical information.

The purpose of the European Statistical Governance Advisory Board is to provide an independent overview of the European Statistical System and its code of practice as it relates to Eurostat. The Board was established to enhance the credibility of European statistics by advising the European Commission on how best to implement and communicate the Statistics Code of Practice with regards to users and data providers.

The board members, selected based on their expertise in the field of statistics, are: Johnny Akerholm, (Chairperson), President and CEO, Nordic Investment Bank, Finland; Tony Atkinson, Senior Research, Nuffield College, Oxford, UK; Jean- Michel Charpin, General Financial Inspector, IGF, France; Margit Epler, Chief Statistician, Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour, Austria; Johann Hahlen, Former President of the Federal Statistical Office, Germany; Karin Mossler, Chief Economist and Director, The National Board of Health and Welfare, Sweden; Edvard Outrata, Former President of the Czech Statistical Office, Czech Republic; and Walter Radermacher, (Observer), Chief Statistician of the EU, Eurostat, Luxembourg.

The Board's report will be made public in late fall.
