EU Court Annuls Kurdish Group’s Terrorist Listing

LUXEMBOURG (CN) - The European Union's second-highest court annulled the EU's decision to place the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) on a list of terrorist organizations and freeze its assets, ruling that the EU had not properly justified its decision.

The Court of First Instance said the EU must "indicate the actual and specific reasons" why the PKK's funds should remain frozen.

The Turkish government blames the Kurdish rebel group for nearly 40,000 deaths since the group launched its armed campaign for independence in 1984.

The EU later called the ruling irrelevant, because the PKK remains on the list.
