EU Birth Rate

BRUSSELS – Over 5 million babies were born in the European Union in 2015, a slight increase over 2001 figures – the first year live births were tracked EU-wide – though far off levels required to keep the population size constant, Eurostat said Wednesday.

The EU’s statistics agency added that on average, women gave birth to their first child at the age of 29. Bulgaria saw the youngest first-time mothers, while Italy saw the oldest.
