EU Auto Group Observes Dip in Car Sales for January

A downturn in Spain and Italy last month caused sales of new passenger cars across Europe to drop by 4.6 percent, a carmakers' association for the region reported Friday.

(CN) — A downturn in Spain and Italy last month caused sales of new passenger cars across Europe to drop by 4.6 percent, a carmakers' association for the region reported Friday.

The demand for new cars in Italy and Spain plummeted by 7.5 percent and 8 percent, respectively.

Even with such declines, however, this past January ranked as the European Union’s second best since 2009 with 1.2 million cars sold. In January 2018, the number sold was 1.25 million.

The report observes a 6.5 percent decline in sales for Volkswagen, but the German manufacturer otherwise maintained market dominance with 24 percent of sales.

Italian-American carmaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles registered the biggest sales drop at 15 percent, while the declines for French carmakers PSA and Renault hit 2 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively.

Among luxury carmakers, Daimler sales fell 1.3 percent and those of BMW sank 2.7 percent.
