EU Applauds Innovative Energy-Saving Solutions

(CN) - Touting a new environmental campaign, the European Commission pointed out that the central rail station in Stockholm uses the body temperatures of commuters to heat a nearby office building, reducing energy costs by 20 percent.

It is one example of the "intelligent, innovative climate solutions" in the commission's new public-private environmental campaign.

Under the slogan "A world you like with a climate you like," the commission plans to collaborate with more than 70 businesses, environmental groups and universities across Europe to solve the climate change problem through practical solutions and public awareness. Europe's climate action commissioner called the plan a "win-win" at the launch in London.

"We have a choice: We can act on our knowledge about climate change. Or we can sit idly by and watch as things get worse," Commissioner Connie Hedegaard. "Both options come with a price tag. So why not create a world we like, with a climate we like - while we still have time? With this campaign we want to focus the debate on the solutions and find out what is holding us back from applying them."

The campaign's website will act as a platform by which individuals, businesses and local groups can upload, promote and discuss low-carbon solutions. There will also be an EU-wide contest to find the best and most original plan.

The commission said it plans to enroll more business associations, universities, nongovernmental organizations and government institutions in the campaign, which will run through 2013. It is part of the EU's objective to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 to 95 percent by 2050.

EU emissions are currently 17 percent lower than 1990 levels, the commission said.
