Estranged Wife May Lose Power Over Life Support

ROUND ROCK, Texas (CN) - A 43-year-old man will remain on life support as his adoptive parents and estranged wife vie for guardianship Thursday, a judge ruled.

Terry Mace Sr. and Carol Mace of Herndon, Pa., say their son, Terry Andrew Mace, suffered from a heart attack on March 6.

Though he is a resident of Colorado, Terry was in central Texas for work.

Noting that their son's wife Yvonne told doctors at Seton Medical Center in Round Rock, Texas, to cease administering "oxygen, hydration and nutrition," the Maces applied for guardianship of Terry on Monday and requested a temporary restraining order to restore life-sustaining treatment.

As the applicants put it, "Terry will die if not hydrated and provided food and/or oxygen while in the hospital."

Terry's heart attack came amid divorce proceedings with Yvonne, and the couple have been separated for four years, indicating a conflict of interest, the parents say.

The Maces also oppose putting any of Terry's three children, who range in age from 16 to 21, in control of their father's care.

"The adult children were raised by their mother and are in a position where they could be inclined to follow her thinking as they spent most of their time with the mother," the application states.

Williamson County Judge John McMaster issued the temporary restraining order on Monday afternoon and set a hearing for Thursday, at which point the order will expire.

Terry Mace Sr. and Carol Mace are represented by the Texas Center for Defense of Life.

"Today we obtained a short-term victory in what may become a long-term battle to save this man's life," the center's president, Greg Terra, stated in a statement while vowing to keep up the fight.
