WASHINGTON (CN) - New gas stations will not have to install gas vapor recovery systems because most vehicles now incorporate the technology, according to new rules adopted by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Since 1990, the EPA has required vapor recovery systems at gas stations in areas of the country that are seriously outside of National Ambient Air Quality Control standards for ozone.
Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA administrator can allow states to omit requirements for the technology as part of the their state plans for meeting air quality standards, once the administrator determines the technology is wide spread in vehicles.
The EPA estimates that not having to install the systems will save $91 million per year after the first three years compared to current installation and operation costs of the systems.
