EPA to Update Industrial Emission Standards

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Environmental Protection Agency is reconsidering emission standards for certain air pollutants produced by fossil fuel-fired plants.

The EPA has received a number of petitions and public comments on source standards it issued in February, and will reconsider certain aspects of each of two sets of standards, it announced last week.

The standards are the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, which are emission standards for air pollutants from electric plants, and the Utility New Source Performance Standards, which are performance standards for commercial and industrial activities that generate steam.

The EPA determined that it did not use all the available data to establish new source emission limits for filterable particulate matter and hydrogen chloride as they apply to new coal and oil-fired plants.

In light of the petitions, the EPA also proposed revising its limits for emissions of a number of toxic chemicals, including sulfur dioxide, lead and mercury.

The EPA seeks comments on the proposed revisions by Dec. 31. If anyone requests a public hearing, it will be held Dec. 18, in Washington D.C.
