EPA Taps Breaks on Coal Emissions Standards

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Environmental Protection Agency announced that it will hold-back the effective date of new, more restrictive emission standards for coal and oil burning electric utility steam generating facilities.

The rules, issued in February, govern mercury and other air borne toxins from industrial generators and institutional units used by hospitals and colleges.

The EPA received several petitions requesting reconsideration of parts of the rules and agreed to look at measures used to establish new source standards for particulate matter and hydrochloric acid.

The Clean Air Act allows the EPA to stay the effectiveness of new rules for up to three months if the administrator convenes a proceeding to reconsider a rule.
