HOLLYWOOD (CN) - A California aviation company leaked radioactive waste from vintage plane gauges into its storage yard, in a residential area, federal prosecutors say.
The Environmental Protection Agency designated the company's warehouse and storage area a superfund site after finding radium-226 and radon-222.
The EPA ordered Preservation Aviation to close and clean up the waste in 2001, but found in 2004 that the company had failed to do either. After Preservation refused to act, the EPA says, it conducted an emergency response. Now the EPA demands that Preservation pay the bill.
Defendants are Riverton Properties and the Joan W. Gregg Revocable Trust.
