WASHINGTON (CN) - The Environmental Protection Agency has approved 10 alternative methods for determining the safety of drinking water under the Safe Drinking Water Act.
The EPA says the new methods are as effective as existing tests and provide a more efficient means for determining the concentrations of atrazine, simazine, 17 semivolatile organic compounds, and Cryptosporidium in drinking water supplies.
The EPA says it has expedited approval of the methods so public water systems, laboratories, and primacy agencies may use newly devised measurement techniques, which also may be less costly.
All public water systems in the U.S. are governed by the act, which requires regular testing of water sources, storage facilities and delivery systems for contaminates.
