Enviros Say Marines Befoul the Ocean

SAN DIEGO (CN) - The Camp Pendleton Marine Cops Base polluted the Pacific Ocean with nearly half a million gallons of sewage, San Diego Coastkeeper says in a federal complaint.

The giant Marine Corps base in San Diego County has let its sewers overflow more than 100 times, mucking up the ocean with "at least 400,000 gallons of untreated sewage," according to the complaint.

There is only one "outfall," or legal sewage release point on base, but the Marines have dumped sewage into the ocean from other as well, the environmentalists say.

San Diego Coastkeeper claims that 22 overflows that released 400,000 gallons of sewage into the ocean 2006 and 2010, and another 70 sewage overflows between 2007 and 2010 did not reach federal waters, but still exposed "at least one person" and the environment to 125,000 gallons of untreated sewage.

The Marines are also accused of illegally dumping sludge 12 times between 2008 and 2010, and failing to monitor all this properly.

The Coastkeepers say the Clean Water Act violations are continuing.

They seek declaratory and injunctive relief, and restoration of affected areas.

They are represented by their house counsel, and by Cory Briggs of Upland.
