SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - The Sierra Club joined the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy in suing the Pentagon for its contracts to buy fuel derived from Canadian oil sands. The environmentalists say the fuel produced from oil sands emits more greenhouse gases than fuel from conventional sources.
The Department of Defense has published a plan stating its policy to disregard the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and to continue to use this fuel, according to the federal complaint.
Canada is the world's largest source of petroleum derived from oil sands, producing 1.3 million barrels per day "by strip mining oil sands and separating the oil from the sands by highly energy intensive processes," according to the complaint. "Production of a barrel of synthetic crude oil from Canadian oil sands produces at least three times [more of] the greenhouse gas emissions than production of conventional crude oil."
The complaint cites a long list of contractors that supply the Pentagon with fuel mined from oil sands, including BP, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, Shell and Valero.
The environmental groups want the Pentagon found in violation of the Energy Independence and Security Act and the National Environmental Policy Act, and enjoined from entering into any more contracts to buy fuels derived from oil sands. They are represented by Gary Davis of Hot Springs, N.C.
